Its that time. Time to say goodbye to my 5 year old laptop (which I named lovingly named Colonel Brandon) I've been pretty hard on this sucker. From the scratched off letters and mousepad, to the crack in the back, and the screen that I swear is going to be in two pieces next time I open it.

My fear is that one day I will go to start homework, or a paper, and my laptop wont turn on, and that week of work will be forever lost. And if that day ever comes, I will probably drop out of law school all together because I will have had a heart attack and will never be the same.
Because the next two weeks will be my only time off until Christmas, I decided there is no better time than now.
Does anyone have any laptop suggestions?
1. I'm too cheap for a Mac (that's right. I said it)
2. And I've loved my Dell- so I'm sort of stuck on those.
3. I don't like netbooks,
4. And a 17 inch screen is way to large.
5. I'm VERY hard on laptops, Durability is a must.
Thats about as far as I've gotten on my wish list.
I've been looking at Dell Inspirons- anyone have any opinions or own one? Just thought I'd throw that out there to get a little feedback! Or does anyone else LOVE their laptop and suggest I buy one like yours?

Lindi just got a Samsung RV511 for $550. I know it's not a Dell, but the computer guy we know said it is one of the best PC laptops out there, including more expensive ones.
Good luck! It's tough, laptop shopping.

My roommate has an HP that she really likes. I agree that Macs are very expensive, but i've never had any problems with mine, and they don't get viruses =]
Macs, so worth it. I love mine and have never had any problems. They also do financing through the apple store- if your school bookstore is also a mac distributor like at Mizzou (where I go), you can finance your mac through the school as well. That way you're not paying one lump sum on a computer- much less painful. :) good luck with the search!
You still have your Dell?!? Wow! Consider me impressed! You ruined any of my suggestions with rule #1. Haha! I loved my Macbook, and now I have a MacBook Pro. I have never had any trouble. And I've heard they are immune to viruses. I'm not sure if that is true though. Also, Michael dropped my first one on the concrete, and it worked like new still! Good luck with the search!
I have a mac. Worth. Every. Penny. At least half of my friends (with PC's) have had to send their compies in to the shop in the 2 years we have been in law school. I have not. My computer runs faster than theirs and never gets viruses (because most virus-makers make viruses for PC's, not macs). Plus, the whole OS is more intuitive than PC's. Take Kelsey's advice and see if you can get some financing or something. I know my law school offers and additional $3000 in loans for a computer, and my compy (a Macbook) was less than 1500. Also I have dropped this thing 8979372983 times and it still works. I used to be a PC girl and I'm never going back.
You know me I will always say a Mac is the best! But I just pulled out my Consumer Reports magazine from Christmas with all the laptop ratings in it and the Inspiron is recommended (all the Macs are of course higher rated) for whatever that's worth. Toshiba Satellite looks like it's fairly comparable (in the Consumer Reports) if you want something else to look at. But if you're good with a Dull, and not going to be talked into a Mac a Dull is an ok choice.
