Sciatic Nerve

This week I learned what my sciatic nerve is. Its is the largest nerve in the human body, running from your lower back, down to your foot.

How do I know this?
Well when it hurts, you'll learn what it is too.

I woke up with crippling pain yesterday radiating down to my toes. I decided this was the end, and I would never get out of my bed again (exaggerating, yes...but pain does that to you) After icing it with a frozen bag of broccoli, and talking myself into moving, I finally was able to go to school.

I proceeded to tell a few friends that I must have pulled a muscle in my behind at some point in time. (the right cheek to be specific) They laughed as a limped through the hallways. I tried sitting on my hand in class, to alleviate pressure, all the while not knowing what was going wrong, and if my leg would need to simply be amputated by the end of the day.

That was, until I called my father. Finally, someone to sympathize with me. He knew exactly what I was going through and gave me helpful suggestions. After an evening of pain killer, stretching, massaging, a hot bath and a good night's sleep with a couple extra pillows propping me up....I feel like I can finally move again today.
This morning, I woke up and laid in bed, afraid to move in case it happened again. The pain is not 100% gone, but it is 100x better.

So in case you ever wake up and think you've pulled a "behind muscle"...I sympathize with you as well.

ooh! that stinks!
A friend of mine sees a chiropractor from time to time when that happens. It's helped her a lot!

Love your blog :)

Just wanted to say that sciatic nerve pain isn't a normal thing, especially when it's very painful (which is sounds like yours definitely was!). It can mean you're having some problems with the discs between the vertebrae in your spine down in your low back (causing the disc to put pressure on your sciatic nerve, which is what causes the paint). If that is what's going on and it's not treated correctly it can become very severe, especially if you're doing a lot of running outside or a lot of new leg-intensive workouts, which it sounds like you are. It's very much worth visiting a doctor about. Definitely not the same thing as a pulled muscle or a sprain!
