I love suitcases!!!! If only I actually used them on a regular basis!

This one I picked up at Salvation army for $1.79.

I first painted it.

Then used decals I had to make it even better!

One of my favorite parts of the suitcase, was the inside...that is actually what persuaded me to buy this one!

Ever heard of Fiverr before?

This site is HILARIOUS! My friend Brittney showed me it yesterday...and I am hooked.

The whole idea is that people put up anything/everything they will do for $5.

Some people crochet, some sing, some do graphic design, sell crafts, sell junk, take photos, shoot movies, edit photos, edit papers, write papers.....everything.

Then you can buy their goods/services for around the world for $5.

It could be a neat resource for some of you creative types!

If anything, it simply provides alot of enjoyment.

Log Pencil Holder

I'm pretty into the woodsy, outdoorsy phase right now. I saw this pencil holder, and decided I could do the same thing. Thanks to a heavy winter storm, there were plenty of branches in the neighborhood to pick from!

Supplies:

1. log/large branch as wide as you would like your holder

2. Saw, something to cut it down to size

3. Large drill bit. One that is as wide as your pencils/pens you plan to put in it.

4. Vice, or really strong hands

Its just like it looks, cut your log to the height you would like.

Then drill holes in the middle!

I loved the look of the final project. This one I made for my friend Brittney, who had the outdoorsy/wood themed wedding last summer. You could even get creative and carve/wood burn things into the side of your log!

A Day in the Life

This weekend was quite unusual, simply because I had multiple bloggers ask me to write up a "day in the life" post. I've actually never had this request before, so to have more than one person ask this weekend....I decided to take them up on it...no matter how dull it may seem.

I couldn't decide a day to write on, so I picked my busiest, and then I'll sum up my "slowest" weekday as well at the end.

Monday (torture day)

I'll admit, I did this to myself....I planned my Mondays like crazy. Its awful, but its over at the beginning of the week, and then its all downhill from there. I did it to myself, and I can't complain.

Wake up at 6:35 (morning routine, check pinterest, gmail, special K cereal...not that I'm on a diet...I just LOVE the stuff, Trader Joes coffee in a tumbler and I'm out the door by 7:15

Class 1: 8:00-8:50 Pre-trial Litigation Lecture

Class 2 9:00-9:50: Corporate Tax

Class 3 10-10:50: Securities Regulation

Now this is where a typical law student would end. 3 classes (especially back to back classes) would be a normal day, and they would be good to go. But not me...I made my mondays awful, so I could have lots of time to work later in the week. Allow me to continue

Work 11:00-12:00: I work for a research company called LexisNexis, I'm a representative, who sits around for an hour, waiting for people to ask me questions. This is when I get my reading done for the rest of the week

Honestly, sometimes at work I do alot less of this

And alot more of this:

Lunch/Break/Study Time 12-1:30: This is when I cram everything else in! I always pack a lunch: Pb & J, apple, 2 cuties, and grapes if we have them. I also make tea at school here, to last me the rest of the day

And now on to the rest of my day:

Class 4 1:30-2:45: Mergers

Class 5 3:00-4:15: Employment Law

Class 6 4:15-6:30: Small groups for Pre Trial Litigation

Phew. And that is it for classes. 6 Classes may not seem like alot...but it is for law school. I've told a few law student friend what my mondays are like, and they honestly look at me like I'm crazy, they had no idea that was possible.

After School:

Gym about 1 hr: The gym I go to is on the side of town where school is, so I pack a gym bag, and hit up the gym after school. Its a great release, plus I know if I head home, I'll sit on my behind, and not want to move the rest of the night.

At the gym I listen to my audio book (I do this driving to an from school as well) I like to feel like I'm getting things accomplished all the time. So at the gym while I run, I watch a tv show on closed caption, and listen to my audio book at the same time.

I also keep a box of Special K bars behind my drivers seat, I eat one of those on the way to the gym, and usually my 2nd cutie from my lunch. (I'm a creature of habit)

Home: I get home about 7:30 (my last class usually gets out early, so I can hit up the gym most days and get home by then). I plop down at the kitchen table, stick something in the microwave for dinner, and start answering etsy messages that have stacked up while I've been between school and home. Once I've eaten, chatted it up with my grandmother (who is always waiting for me) I head up stairs to my crafting/study room.

I usually get in about 30 min of some sort of craft in here (which is why alot of my steps in my crafts are done in the dark, with poor lighting). Then I open my laptop to watch a couple of shows from they day before, while I work on etsy orders. Most days I have 2 shows to watch, but if I don't I listen to my audio book while doing hangers.

Then its about 1 hour of hitting the books. (I do almost all of my homework on the weekend, because my monday's are so busy, I know I wont be in the mood that evening) And call Kevin before falling asleep.

I actually love my routine. When someone messes it up (like getting my car towed at the gym a couple weeks ago, or having unexpected visitors over when I get home from work) I mentally shut down for a bit. I really hate my schedule being messed up. My sister has pointed out I've gotten much worse at that since I started school.

Mondays are certainly the most packed. Thurs are the least. Because I have a front loaded week, I am actually done with classes for the week by 11am on Wednesday morning (see...this is why the mondays are 100% worth it!) Then the rest of the week I work from 1-4:30 at the capitol building, in the government hearing. I take notes, then come home, edit them and send them off!

I do alot of crafting on Thurs and Fridays. By Friday. I already have to start my reading for Monday, and I try to get a good chunk done by Saturday evening. Blogging is done sporadically throughout the week!

I can't tell you this is the typical life of a law student, no way. Everyone has their own thing, some have kids, some have spouses, some have a job every day, other drink and party no matter what day it is. For me, any given semester is different. Last semester was nothing like this semester, and my first year was 100% different. I don't even go to the school on Thurs and Fridays, which is pretty unusual. I am lucky, that I have a good place to study at home, and I don't have to keep going to the library.

Anyway, that was (I'm certain) way more than anyone will actually read. I thought I would share it, for those that wanted a more in depth view into my mundane life :) Especially anyone looking to start law school, its proof you just have to figure out your rhythm.

Fried Ravioli {Guest Post}

I have a very special guest blogger today! Its his blogging debut! Here is Kevin (yes, Kevin my etsy business partner/boyfriend) with delicious looking Fried Ravioli!

Hey readers of Kitty's blog, Kevin here! This is a fried ravioli recipe I found while trying to come up with an italian appetizer for a dinner I was giving to a group of teenagers. I wanted more than just salad and bread so I looked online at some appetizer ideas. I found this recipe that is really easy, and doesn't take a whole lot of ingredients.

All you need is:
1 Bag of frozen cheese raviolis (frozen)
1 Large egg
1/3 Cup of whole milk
1/2 Cup of breadcrumbs
1/2 Teaspoon of oregano
1/2 Teaspoon of basil
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt (optional)
Shredded parmesan cheese
1 Jar of marinara sauce

Step 1:
Heat 1 inch of oil in a pot or saucepan until oil is 350 degrees. Whisk together the egg and milk in one bowl. In a second bowl mix together breadcrumbs, oregano, basil, and salt.

Step 2:
Take a ravioli (thawed) and dip it in the egg/milk mixture and let extra run off. After, run the ravioli through the breadcrumbs until fully coated. Place the ravioli on a tray or plate. Repeat this step until all the raviolis are covered.

Step 3:
With a slotted spoon or a fork, dip the breaded raviolis in the oil in batches of 3 or 4 until golden brown. Place the fried ravioli on another plate or tray that is covered with paper towel.

Step 4:
Heat marinara sauce in a small saucepan and serve in small dipping bowls.

Step 5:
Once dried, move the raviolis onto a serving dish. At this point you can sprinkle some parmesan cheese on the top. The raviolis are now ready to serve!

This is a really easy recipe that you can make at home. However, it may create a mess to clean up afterwards but it is well worth it. I hope you enjoy this recipe!

Transforming A Trunk

My sister moved into a new apt a few months back, and was looking for a trunk to use as her coffee table. I couldn't pass up the opportunity to craft for her when I found an old trunk at salvation army a couple of weeks ago.

So I sanded it, painted it, added handles, found an old padlock with key, and then gave it another sanding for that antique look!

All in all, it turned out pretty great! Plus I think she loved it, which is a perk (but if she hated it, I would have kept it...so that wouldn't have been so bad!)

The Pre Engagement Engagement

I've decided I want to start a new fad. I'm calling it the "pre engagement engagement"

You get a simple ring- like a sterling silver ring from Tiffany's

(still nice, but no where near as pricey as a real engagement ring)

A few of my favorites

You get a fun, low key, proposal, one in the comfort of your own home. You don't go around telling your family and friends, its really just an occasion for the two of you.

And the best part is that you get to start calling each other a new "title". I haven't come up with one yet.

I have a good friend at school that is in the same boat as me: they have been dating quite a while, not ready for marriage, but hate calling him her "boyfriend" because it sounds like the couple is age 16 and just starting to hold hands in a dark movie theater. She tried the term "roommate" once, and got scolded for not being honest about her relationship status. We both agree "partner" is probably the most accurate term, but it has a different connotation than we actually mean.

Its the "hey we are still just 'dating' but we aren't looking for anyone else, so I'm cool wearing a ring that symbolizes the fact that I am taken" Its not a promise ring...I don't like that idea. Its not a promise to each other, its a willful proclamation to the world that you've got someone, and you're not scoping the market for a new one.

I'm not saying every couple needs to go through this step, no way. Its like how some chose to live together before marriage, and some don't. It isnt a step for everyone, but its there for atleast a few of us out there who are looking for a step between dating and holy-crap-I-just-signed-my-life-away.

I figure its a nice stepping stone for those who have been dating a long time, but aren't going to take that "big step" anytime soon. I think of it as being like the modern day, guy giving the girl his "pin" to wear. (atleast that is the understanding I have of "pinning", thanks to my childhood of being raised on musicals, including "Bye Bye Birdie")

Glitter Key

This one is a quick craft, seen on pinterest here! Its perfect for when you have two keys that look practically identical, like I had. Simply coat with a thin layer of pod modge, glitter over the top, and you have this.

I was skeptical at first, how long it would actually stay on, but I'm pretty impressed with how well it sticks to the metal!

Stamped Wood Spoon

It never occurred to me that I could use my metal stamping kit to stamp wood! That is until I saw the post here

Materials: Wood spoon, hammer, hard surface, and metal stamping kit!

Line up your letters, and stamp away!

I tried to think of witty things to put on it....but gave up :)

It would be something cute to tie to a gift bag, and label the bags by stamping the person's name on the spoon. You could do a whole wood utensil set for engagement gifts, or housewarming present! It would would great to stamp on a handle, if you found a flat handled wooden utensil

A few fast facts about me... I'm a Navy brat who has lived in three of the four corners of this country. Big Crafts = less time

I have a couple big crafts I've taken on this week...and unfortunately, cannot share them since they are for two birthdays! Unfortunately...that means less crafts to blog about :(

So instead, I'll share a few things!

First, thanks to everyone who linked up to our first Tute Tuesdays! You're welcome to keep linking up for a couple of days! I'll make sure to post another next Tuesday!

I've gotten really into audio books lately. You don't realize how much time you really have in a day, until you start an audio book. Did you know you can get them from your local library? It certainly doesn't compare to reading, but when you don't find much time to read for fun, its a great way to get a few books in. I listen to it in the car, when I'm at the post office, at the gym, crafting. I've been through about 12 hours of books in the last week. If you haven't given them a try, its alot of fun! The selection isn't great at the library, but its not bad!
Incase you are curious, I listened to "One for the Money" and "The Firm"

On that note, if you're in law school and have never read a John Grisham book...they are great. I feel like they mean so much more to you when you are reading about 3rd year law students and know exactly what they are going through. I got hooked over winter break. This is my 3rd book (if you count the actual book I keep in my purse, that I'm halfway through)

While Kevin was here this weekend, we decided to visit all four of the cupcake stores in Lincoln, and compare them. (we hit up one in Omaha as well!) Incase you're ever in town, I've got a few suggestions on places to get good cupcakes :)

I also had a wonderful bouquet of flowers waiting for me when I got home from school on Valentine's day!

As for school, things are going well. Just truckin along. This is the time in the year, when you feel like you're into classes, but finals are quite looming yet. I've started outlining for a couple of classes, and even bought a study supplement to help me through Corp Tax. Tax and Accounting just has not been something I grasp well. Even in undergrad it was a tough course for me.

I'm still unsure of my plans for the summer.....but its weird to think this will REALLY be my last summer break of all time. At least, assuming I'm not a teacher later on in life. Its becoming increasingly more difficult for me to try and plan for the future. Finding jobs and internships don't take priority when I'm trying to just get through school. Its on the list of things to do....just not high on the list right now. Its such a huge change from undergrad, I had a new internship every semester, with a new job every summer. Applying for jobs was fun, but in law school, not so much.

I have decided to do the farmers market again this summer! Just a few days to start with...but it was so much fun, getting out and actually seeing customer's reactions to my items. The whole atmosphere is amazing, everyone that goes to the market is in such a great mood!

Baked Parmesan Chicken

I'll admit...I don't cook often. I'm always surprised at how easy recipes can be though when I actually do try it. This is probably under the cooking 101 tab in any cook book, but it thought it turned out delightfully easy, so for those of you who fall under cooking for beginners- here we are!

Parmesan Chicken for two!

2 thawed chicken breasts- put into a ziplock bag of 1/8 cup oil, 1 tsp garlic (we used the stuff in the jar) Mix it all up!

Grab a bowl with 1/8 cup Parmesan cheese, and 1/8 bread crumbs and cover your chicken by dipping it into your dry mixture.

Pull it out of the bag, put it in a dish, and stick it in the oven at 450 and cook for about 25 minutes.

(we are pretty proud of ourselves)

While doing that, cook your pasta, heat up your sauce (I'm not even going to try and make my own sauce, we used Valentino's sauce....and you just can't go wrong with that)

Throw it all together, and yum yum yum!

Caramel Apples

I had this genius idea (or so I thought). I love caramel apples, but dislike two things:

1. slobbering when I eat them

2. running out of caramel and just having the apple left once the outside is gone

I decided the best idea would be to cut it first, and put caramel over it after!

It was a bit messy, and probably not the best solution...but it was a pretty decent attempt!

If you haven't done caramel apples, you just need the square caramels and a smidgen of milk.

Cut the apple with the apple cutter

Microwave, dip in caramel and enjoy!

I thought it turned out delicious. Even though the photo above looks whole, its sliced up. That way I was ready to pull pieces off right away. One of them I even poured melted chocolate over afterwards....it was heavenly

Just don't burn the caramel.....it turns out like this:

Vday Weekend Begins

Enjoying a wonderful weekend with Kevin, who flew in Wednesday night to spend time with me! He got to explore the Capitol building with me, while I had to go into work.

I actually think he was pretty impressed with how cool it was on the inside. We cant get cell service in the hearing usually, and he kept saying it was because we were in a castle :)

We hit up Indigo Bridge Coffee shop and Books to work on etsy orders together (its nice being able to do this together, instead of over the phone and email all the time)

Then we hit up Serendipities for a cupcake! My goal this weekend is to visit all the cupcake shops in Lincoln. I don't get out enough when I don't have someone visiting!

And then of course got to watch Big Bang Theory (our favorite thing to do together in college!)

Hopefully I'll be getting in a few crafts, or cooking this weekend and report back to you all how it goes!

2 min Lens Cozy

I had extra sweater left over from the legwarmers I made last week, and thought it would make a cozy little lens cozy!

I sewed across the bottom and side, then flipped it right side out! Nothing to it!

Handwarmers and Heating Pads

How about little heart handwarmers for your loved one for valentine's day? Although I've seen these handmade heating pads before, I got the Vday idea here. Now that I've pulled the sewing machine out, actually set it up, and remembered how to thread a bobbin, I'm able to do a few of these crafts that require smaller stitches.

This is just like it looks- sew it like a pillow. Cut out two of your shapes, make sure they match up so that the right sides will face out. Sew it up like a pillow leaving a small space to flip it right side out.

Fill it with heating goodies. I've heard these will all work: rice, wheat, beans, barley, oatmeal

And sew it back up!

Microwave it for a few seconds (like 25-30 ish) Now you can have little handwarmers,

Or large warmers for those extra cold days (or those "that time for the month" days)

Get creative...like making one for your favorite state! (That is Nebraska...incase my sewing skills were not to par and the shape is not as clear as it should be)

When I go to work, I’m often there too early. I’m a very punctual person…sometimes too punctual. I decided to take a little tour around the capitol since I was too early for the hearing. I haven’t spent time here since my fourth grade field trip.

I love the look of the building, the design, the history, everything about it. Well almost everything.

I got in the scariest elevator of my life. I seriously thought, I wonder if this is the elevator that Tower of Terror was based off of. The walls were padded, and there was not room for more than just me. It looked old, moved jerky, and I wanted out immediately.

But it did take me to a top level, where coincidentally there was a door unlocked to the outside (although I feel like the sign telling me not to go out there should have been a deterrence). There, I got to enjoy the view of Lincoln. It’s really nice, considering this must be the tallest, or one of the tallest, buildings in Lincoln. It has a great view.

So this is where I work. Even though I work in the basement, in the same room, 3 afternoons a week, in the back corner, because that is where the only outlet is in the room for me to plug my computer in, and take notes.

As for the rest of my week, there have certainly been a few ups and downs.
Yesterday I'd set my alarm wrong, missed my first class. Then stayed at school until 5:30, for 5 of the classes I had left...and decided to go to the gym before going home.

When I left the gym all sweaty and cold, my car was gone.
It was towed.

Ever had a car towed? Me neither. Its quite an ordeal. You have to figure out what towing company took it, call, have someone get you, drive there, go through all the license and registration motions (and look dumb when you take out the entire contents of your glove box and tell them to find it, because you don't even know what it looks like)....then fork over $130 for their services...which you didn't even want in the first place.

Thankfully, I have something to look forward to this week. Kevin is flying in tomorrow evening, for the weekend. As long as he helps keep an eye out for those "no parking, cars will be towed" signs, it should be blissful few days.

How to: Social Media Buttons

I just realized recently, I needed social media buttons at the top of my page to make it easier to find my other social media outlets. I wanted to make it pretty easy, so since I worked on a couple of these...I wanted to share it with you!

Here is how you would add social media buttons!

Go into your dashboard, and click add a gadget. Then the html gadget.

Now is the fun part. I made some coral colored buttons you are welcome to use, but if not, just make your own and insert them into this little formula below:

If you want to coral buttons, leave the GREEN script. If not, replace the GREEN script with the url of the image you want.

The RED script should be replaced with YOUR url, that you want that button to link to:

Heart Bookmark

I had no idea I was in such the valentine's day spirit...but so many craft ideas have been floating around...that I just cant help myself. This one is great for any occasion- or no occasion at all! I saw this here, and thought it was just perfect! I love bookmarks, and gave Kevin's mother and grandmother similar bookmarks from Anthropologie for Christmas. So lets go ahead and call this an anthropologie inspired craft! (I found a photo here of one of the sets of anthro bookmarks...incase you were wondering what I was talking about)

What you need:

1. A paperclip

2. Felt

3. Needle and thread

4. Hot Glue

This one is very simple! Cut out two hearts from felt

Sew around one heart.

Then around the other.

You aren't going to sew them together, but turn the hearts wrongside up, and hot glue them around the paperclip!

In my mind I was thinking...is hot glue really going to stay? Yes...its actually amazing how hefty this came out. I never would have guessed it was hot glued together.

You can even attach it to the front of a V-day card! Just cut a small slit in the front of your card

Yarn Wrapped Words- FAIL

I fail at crafts...all the time. Yarn wrapped wire words is way harder than I thought. Maybe I don’t have the patience…but here was my attempt

The word got way too bunch, too complicated trying to get around the letters, trying to figure out how to add on yarn. Not to mention, I was skyping at the time and didn't pay quite as much attention as I should have.

It started as this:

Usually when I fail at a craft, I redo, and try to perfect….but not this time. I had zero patience to re-do this one.

Proof that not every craft I try comes out as well as I hope.

Pop Can flowers

I refuse to acknowledge that part of the U.S does not recognize the word “pop” so if you don’t understand what I am talking about…you’re welcome to quit reading and lose out on learning about this wonderful craft J

When I went to Oklahoma, not so long ago, I was inspired by my cousin’s creativity. Seriously, she is WAY craftier than I am, and extremely modest about it. I took pictures of every inch of her apartment (in a non-creepy way) which will be shared at a later date.(assuming she doesnt read this and object) It includes crafts I can’t do, don’t have a place for, or wont even try to measure up to the level of craftiness that she achieved in her crafts. This one, I went ahead and attempted. Here was my inspiration- her wreath on her door:

This was my attempt.

Although I did not ask her how she made them (she is a very busy person…no need to bother her!) I feel like I made a pretty good attempt.

For one flower you need:

1. Two pop cans

2. A tack (or something pointy)

3.Scissors

4. Paper to draw a template

5. An earring (can be a plain earring, a metal brad, an earring that has lost its other half)

6. Spray paint- optional

First you need a template. I drew out my attempt at a flower. (Did I mention I cannot draw?!) it worked well enough! I made it about the width of a pop can (a bit smaller)

Cut out your template. Then cut the top and bottom off of your can with a pair of sharp scissors. Then cut down the side to make it a metal sheet.

Cut out two flowers from your template. Try to fit both on one can.

Cut out a slightly smaller flower, do the same with your second can- but do only one of those.

Cut out a slightly smaller flower than that, and cut it out of your second can. (I did two of these)

You can vary these with more or less lawyers of petals, and get creative on shapes and sizes!
For the top layer or two, I rolled the petals up, to add more dimension.

The bottom layers, I bent as well. The best way to explain how I bent them, was to place your thumb on the end of the flower petal, and bend it in. Just take a look at the petals, and you can figure out what I’m talking about! It adds a lot of dimension. I thought I failed miserably until I did that step, and that makes all the difference in the dimensional flower look of the whole thing!

Now is the fun part! I went ahead and assembled before spray painting, I didn’t find a problem with this. I used a tack to poke holes in the middle of each layer.

Then I used a plain earring to attach them all!

Now spray paint the flower! (this could really use a second coat...but I love it just the same!)

When it is dry, you can add various items to the middle! I used a fabric button earring, which lost its other pair, making a way cute center!

Semi-Famous: The Second Encounter & An Open Invitation for Coffee

If you're a blogger, you may have thought at one time "I wonder if I've ever met someone that has read my blog, and I don't know it"

Well today is one of those days a blogger dreams of (Okay, maybe not dreams....but at least thinks about) Today I had a 3rd year law student come introduce herself to me. She said she wanted to explain why she looks at me like she knows me, and its because she reads my blog. I asked how she found it, and she mentioned a couple of other law students had showed it to her. I tried to hide my excitement....(I've only had this happen once before, at the farmers market when someone said they recognized me, and read my blog) but really I was freaking out inside.

I don't care if I'm not actually famous, but today I felt like I was.

It was an unexpected delight, to help fix my morning when the dentist told me I have my first cavity. :( No matter how many times he told me it was inevitable, my teeth just aren't grown all the way together in the back, I still feel like I have let my teeth down. (that same feeling when you forget to feed your fish when you wake up, and realize you forgot later in the day, and feel like you're the worst person in the world)

As for another "housekeeping" note:

I also had a blogger email me a couple of weeks ago, just to tell me she feels like we are similar and to invite me to have coffee if I am ever in the Nashville area. After emailing her for a while, I realized I should extend the invite to other readers as well:

Photo Film Valentines

I saw the idea for making a wedding save the date from a film canister here, but since save the dates are not on my to do list anytime soon...I thought...why not valentines!

Although I was hesitant, I walked up to a nice photo lady at walgreens and asked what happens to the empty film containers after they are developed. She had to think on it a while, but realized they go in bin on the side of the machine, and she is pretty sure they just get tossed. I asked if I could have them, and she gladly handed over the 4 that were in there. I'm certain you could collect enough by visiting every few days, and stopping by all the photo places you can think of! For now, 4 was plenty!

Now take your film canister, and there is no easiy way to do this... but gently pry off one of the sides of the canister. Try not to damage it, you will preferably want to put this back on.

Pull out the innards

Now for the roll. I happen to have some film with me that was bad. But you could easily do old negatives, fun paper, or a print out that looked like film. You want it about 6 inches long, but you can make it longer if you want a long message!

I trimmed the end of mine to look like the end of a roll of film.

I used white paper to write a cute little message, then glued it on the roll. Please feel free to be more creative than me! I tried to think of a witty saying...the incorporated the idea of film...but it was way harder than I thought.

Now tape the end to the roll.

Put it back together. I was able to bend my cap back on...but you may need hot glue, or even just a piece of black cardstock to use as a bottom!

Roll it up, and had them out!

If you want to add candy, maybe tape a roll of smarties are something cute on the end! That way they can have the candy, and pull out the message while trying to get to it!

Valentine Wreath Tutorial {Guest Blogger}

Mom of two, blogger, Pinterest-aholic and addicted to crafts!

Today I want to share with you a Valentine's Day wreath I made last year. All you need to make one too is cardboard, felt (I love felt) and a hot glue gun (my BFF).

I made a heart shape out of an old Christmas gift box.

I used some Mod Podge and red tissue paper to cover the heart so you couldn't see the grey color of the cardboard at the end of the project.

Now is time to make the felt roses

Cut a bunch of circles in different sizes (I didn't used any patterns) Then spiral cut each circle and roll it up.

Use some hot glue at the end to secure the rose to not open.

Start attaching the roses with hot glue.

And here is what it looks like when is all full of roses:

I was happy with the final result but remembered I had a few rhinestones brads leftover from a previous project and decided to add some here and there. I took out the rhinestone from the brad and hot glued it on the roses.

The UBE

I recently found out, a change is on the horizon. Nebraska will adopt the UBE (Universal Bar Exam) starting in 2013. Well luckily for me, I graduate in May 2013 (hopefully!) and will be the first class to experience the exam.

Why is this good? Well other states have adopted the UBE as well- these states according to wikipedia (Yes, I'm a law student, trained in legal research, and wiki is still my best friend)

Alabama (July 2011)

Arizona (July 2012)

Colorado (February 2012)

Idaho (February 2012)

Missouri (February 2011)

Montana (conditional approval)

Nebraska (conditional approval)

North Dakota (February 2011)

Washington (July 2013)

Normally if you take the bar exam in Nebraska....you can just practice in....Nebraska (downer) Yes, you can jump through hoops to be able to be certified to practice law in another state, but that all sounds like a mess.

The pros: There is now flexibility! That is, assuming I get a high enough score, to pass in Nebraska, and the score required in the other states to practice there as well!

The cons: The Nebraska test wasn't as difficult as some bar exams before, (but I really had very little intention on taking it here) so now it will be more difficult.

*if any of this information is incorrect, I apologize. This is from my very limited knowledge, research, and short questioning of our dean on the matter*

Sweater Legwarmers

I love legwarmers....and I've been seeing these sweater legwarmers (examples here and here) And got super excited when I walked into Salvation Army to find out it was 5 for $5 last week! (5 articles of clothing for $5) So here is the finished product:

I picked out 4 sweaters (and a little something else for later) that had sleeves I would love to have as legwarmers. First find sweaters that have sleeves that you like.

Next, cut sleeves off- some are angled like this. And you will want to cut it straight.

For the more Jersey knit sweaters- that's it! You can put them on immediately and start wearing them! You shouldn't have a problem with them fraying.

For the more sweatery sweaters (yes...I said it) when they cut, they will fray, and not only that but they are probably MUCH too big. There are a couple of other steps you will need.

Cut out the bottom of the sweater- assuming it has a ribbed look on the bottom.

You will want to do 2 steps:

1. make the sleeve thinner at the top

2. attach the ribbed bottom of the sweater, to the top of the sleeve that is frayed.

First, cut the ribbed piece to fit around your calf pretty snugly. If you're like me, you want them to smoosh down on your leg for a slouchy look.

Next, break out that sewing machine! You want to angle your stitch from mid way of the sweater sleeve, up to the frayed top, making the top of the sleeve to match the ribbed piece you just cut for your calf. Make sure your stitch is on the wrong side.

Trim that off, then sew your ribbed piece into a loop.

Attach the loop to the wrong side of your sleeve. Match up the seams like so:

Sew around your sleeve to attach your ribbed top to your frayed piece!

Flip rightside out, fold down your new top of the legwarmer, and show it off!

Now show them off!

Oh and did I mention I got new glasses?

No-Sew Fabric Watchband

A few things about me:

1. I am a fossil addict

2. I always wear a watch

3. I only wear fossil watches

4. I break watches a lot (which is why I buy fossil….lifetime warranty)

I have 4 fossil watches, one of which has the changeable band. The one with the changeable band is perfect for this craft! I saw the project here and got excited. Then saw it required sewing, and a button snap kit. I had the flu this week when I worked on this, and was NOT in the mood to get into sewing, or go out to the store to get a snap kit. This is a basic rendition! I many end up sewing it next week, but so far, it works great!

Grab a long strip of fabric, about 3 times as wide as you would like your strap to be.

Iron 1/3 of it over. Iron the other 1/3 side over

Iron it in half.

Now is when you would sew a stitch down it to keep it together…but I decided it was unnecessary... simply because I did not want to leave the confines of my bedroom.

And that’s it! Just string on your watch band, and tie it around your wrist!

This is so cute, and functional! You can also twist it, add other fabric strips, tie it in front or in back, tuck in the tie, or make it a bow:

I’m sure I will have many more of these to come!

Postage Stamp Heart

Since I'm on a stamp kick, the lot of stamps left over from my grandfather. I saw a version of this here and thought I would redo a canvas, and make it my own.

This was from an old canvas, that I mod podged papers from a dictionary over. Then collected some red postage stamps, and made a heart! Next time, I’ll draw the heart out first, so it isn’t off center- but it turned out great despite of my mistake!

Bailee's New Home

I built a little home for Bailee yesterday! I stopped by the grocery store to pick up a few boxes, before heading home from work. I can tell she loves it :)

At first, I thought I'd made the door too small, but she managed to squeeze in (maybe she is just fluffy, and not fat like grandma says!)

She played with me for a while in it, until she got bored.

I found her last night just sitting in there for multiple hours....maybe this act of love will make her a little more friendly towards me in the future

Vintage Book Box

Crafts with old books are some of my favorites! Especially crafts that don't cost anything!

I'm sure you have old books lying around- my favorite are these reader digest books. They are a great size, and have neat designs on them. If you don't have one, most goodwills will have them for $1!

Next you need a small box- Now technically these post office boxes are not supposed to be used for crafts. (whoops) but I always have them lying around my room for shipping purposes. I just couldn't help it. You can pick up these boxes outside the post office for free!

First use an exacto knife to cut out the book pages. Them measure the box inside the book.

Since it didn't fit, I did have to cut it down to size a bit!

After getting it the right size, hot glue everything together. You don't need the top portion of the box, since it will fit inside the book. But make sure its hot glued nicely. I even used packing tape to reinforce the corners. Don't worry about how it looks! You will cover it with fabric next!

Next, grab a piece of scrap fabric, and felt. The felt is just used to make the bottom more plush, to not feel like a box. Measure the fabric out, to make sure it will cover the box.

Then hot glue the fabric to the bottom corners of the box.

Make sure it is secure, by going back around and adding more glue where needed.

Next fold the fabric around the box, like you are covering a canvas or gift wrapping a box. Add glue where needed. For me, I did the sides first, and the corners last

Once its all covered, Glue the box to the bottom of the book!

Next glue it to the spine.

And you're done! Fun little storage box- or a great way to give a present to someone.

Free Vintage Stamps

Is anyone looking for old stamps to craft with? We've been going through my grandfather's old stamp collection...and after about 100 stamps, we picked out the most valuable, sold them...and are left with boxes of stamps. I'm planning on crafting with some, but wanted to see if anyone else was interested?

I've done one stamp craft- this bunting- which I love!

Vinyl Record Tiered Tray- 5 Different Ways

This is a really fun, super easy craft. If you've never worked with vinyl records before, do not be alarmed! I say there are 6 different ways, simply because you can melt, and stack the records in various ways, to make them unique and fit how you would like them to be used. You can even melt them back, to an extent, to change it up for different parties!

Total cost: $5.45

What you need:

1. You need two vinyl records (found in the attic, friends, thrift stores)

2. Tiered Cake Plate Hardware. I got mine on etsy here, but you can get them on ebay, and through suppliers if you need alot, for a wedding for example! ($5.45 with shipping) You can even get one, to three tiers!

3. An oven is option- but helpful if you want them not to be flat

The hardware is simple, you will just stack your records like so:

Now for the fun part- melting record. I'll show you a few ways to stack your records! If you want them melted, turn on your over to about 220 Degrees F. Once preheated, leave it in for just a couple of minutes, you'll start to see the edges warp on most records. Grab it with a towel, and mold it into the shape you would like!

If you want a bowl shape, a bowl helps to make that! Just press it inside, let it cool, pull it out and you can keep working with it!

As you can see, these are the same two records over and over! You can remelt them easily. However, they will often not go completely flat again! You can also use a smaller record for the top- but its just not something I had around at the time!

Don't want it tiered? You can take off the bottom, and just have a fun little party bowl! Great for chips!

Don't have an oven? You can get the wavy look with a blow dryer! the bowl is harder to do, but the wavy one isn't bad at all!

Back From Oklahoma

I took a last minute trip to Oklahoma this weekend, which was quite splendid! A friend and I wanted to go visit friends at my undergraduate school in Edmond, so we made the trek down last minute.
I gotta say- its ugly- but I miss this place!

It was wonderful, getting to have coffee with old friends, catching up on their married lives!

I was able to have lunch with Amber from The Pless Press, meet for coffee with a club sister, and see the new house and new puppy of my good friend Ashley.

I am NOT a dog person....at all....but this thing was cute. It reminded me of a little ewok! If I told myself it really was an ewok...I'm pretty sure I could get over the dog aspect.

My cousin, Alana, was happy to open her apartment to me! This girl is incredibly crafty. I made certain to take photos of every inch of her place, so she can teach me all her crafts! I made sure to visit Pei Wei, my favorite Chinese food place of all time, had coffee from All About Cha....and we finished by hitting up Teds.

A busy weekend, creates a busy next week, not to mention the etsy orders piling up...bleck! But it was all worth it! Crafts have been a little backed up, but be expecting more crafts, and a giveaway coming up this week!

Fives

This may sound silly...but I've recently realized Kevin and I are now on "Fives" in our relationship. That is, we started seeing each other in the spring of 2008. Although we don't say we've been dating 4 years yet (since we don't count us as dating until I finally asked him about making it "official"- you know that awkward talk) we're now on the 5th time we celebrated things. This valentine's day will now be the 5th Valentine's Day we've celebrated while seeing each other!

So I thought I'd do a little look back...

This was the spring of 2008, just a few weeks after the "hey, why aren't we dating" talk

Spring of 2009- after another school banquet

Spring of 2010 when I graduated

Last spring (2011)

And now!

Honestly, I don't think we've changed all that much....except that we are looking a little more like adults now (but not by much!)

Since V-day isn't on a weekend, this will be our first one to NOT spend together. Kevin has decided to come visit the weekend before. Thankfully he has chosen NOT to surprise me like last year. Its not that I don't enjoy it...but I may not come across this way....I like order in my life. Surprises often make me cry (not the tears of joy kind) simply because I do not physically or mentally know how to deal with changes in my mental plans. I'm trying to get better, really.

So this is for our first big "Five" which we won't be spending together....Maybe we will have to skype and pretend to be eating noodles across the table from each other. Pasta is our valentine's day tradition, ever since our first Vday together...during a momentous double date which included pasta, apples to apples, and going to walmart to play games- typical college students. (I doubt the other two friends on the date- Katie and Dillon- even realize that was the first time we had a "date"...but for us...it was still a pretty fond memory)

Engagement Rules

I have this terrible awful habit, of creating these rules on a moment's notice....and I spurt them out...without even thinking. Afterwards, if someone brings up one of my rules...I had no idea I'd even said that. Since I am at the age where most friends are engaged/married, one of my favorite topics for rules is for how my proposal will go down (that is, when I'm ready for that sort of thing)

I've said everything from:

I want to be surprised

....I don't want to be TOO surprised

I'd like photos

...But I don't want someone I know there

He can have help

...but it has to be one of my friends, I don't trust his to keep a secret

It has to be a secret, none of this -everyone knows already deal

Not with family around

....but close enough so I can see them soon

I want it to be creative

...but no food involved

He needs to get down on one knee

...and he has to put the ring on me, I don't want to just find it.

Be certain I at least look sorta nice

...but don't make it obvious that its coming

Don't do it on a holiday, birthday, or obvious event

....but just a time where I can see everyone to tell people in person

No videos, I'll look angry when I'm surprised

Public places are okay, as long as its just strangers around

The ring had better fit,
...or I'll wait for him to get it sized before I say yes

And that is just to name a few....on one single topic.

Am I controlling....possibly...but more importantly, I know that engagements are so exciting... its not like I'd remember all the rules, or yell at him and say he has to do it over. Haha.

Just a little fact about me, to get to know me better, even if I'm not proud of it! And I'm just hoping I'm not the only girl out there that does this.

New Job

I started my new job this week! For those of you counting, that means I'm working 2 jobs (3 if you count etsy...which does take up quite a bit of time). For my new job, I work here:

That is the Nebraska Capital, for those of you who are unfamiliar with it. However, its nickname is the "(insert male anatomy here) of the Plains" Why is it referred to as the "P--- of the Plains"? Well, it could be because of its overall shape an appearance....and for the statue at the top, which is a sewer, sewing his seeds of fertility across the plains.

This semester I was hired by a lobbying firm, to sit in on the Government Committee hearings, and take notes, and write up reports for clients. This is the second time working at a capital (I worked in Oklahoma my senior year of undergrad) and I'm still shocked at how laid back everything is in the legislature.

Who knows...maybe state senator will end up on my list of jobs to have one day

All you need is the little ribbon clamps- at your local craft store. Roll up your ribbon a couple of times, and clamp them on with pliers!

Then put on various charms- to make them pretty!

The Long Weekend

I had an exceptionally long, wonderful weekend. My weekend started at 11am on Wednesday and concluded Monday at midnight....it was splendid. My first surprise was having coffee with a good friend...who (for her unfortunate luck) was recently removed from the UK because of a few visa problems. She is accompanying her husband, who is currently a student there. Hopefully everything goes through, and she will be reunited with him shortly, but until then, she is stuck having boring American coffee dates with yours truly. Since I had last seen her, she had taken up crocheting (much more successfully than I had during my last attempt) and this weekend, she gave me these WONDERFUL leg warmers which she handmade.

I am incredibly impressed, and will be wearing them every day until I start to sweat in them from the summer's heat

She is considering opening an etsy store soon- which I will of course pass along to my readers- so they can get a pair as well!

Saturday my sister and I enjoyed massages. It was heavenly. It was a belated Christmas gift to my sister, which was technically a gift to me as well.

Sunday was homework and reading a novel day (I have a little kid obsession with the Artemis Fowl series, and had not realized a new book had come out about a year ago) ...and work on redesigning my blog day. What do you think of the new header?

I'm still teaching myself photoshop....slowly...but I'm getting the hang of a few things!

And finally Monday was pick out new prescription glasses day (I'm looking forward to getting these in a week or two....be looking out for photos!) And finally have coffee with my good friend again, suffering through life back in America. We visited Jones Bros Cupcakes- a large Omaha coffee/cupcake/lunch place, great for a multi-hour coffee date!

I've been waiting to announce my WONDERFUL "Christmas" present! I won a Jo Totes bag last month from Much Love Illy!!! I freaked out when I saw that I was the winner...I couldn't wait! Because of the Christmas rush, and being out of town, I finally got to see my bag in PERSON last weekend!

I was waiting for actual daylight before taking a photo of it (I've been going to school when it is dark, and coming home when it is dark) and share my excitement! I had to settle with an extremely overcast, snowy, windy day....so my pictures aren't quite showing off my excitement!

This way, you'll never lose your dishes again! I'm sure many of you bring casseroles or desserts in your Pyrex dishes, and cross your fingers you will get them back! This one is fool-proof. The post it note you place on the dish may fall off, or the tape could wash off or become unreadable after cleaning the dish. Etching Glass- Dremel Craft #1

You don't often hear of the guy, giving the girl power tools for Christmas....but for this girl....it was perfect! For Christmas Kevin got me a dremel! I've wanted one ever since it took me 3 days to hand file the inside of the ring I made from a quarter.

I kept finding crafts pop up on blogger, that looks so much fun, and then I'd keep scrolling to find out a dremel was needed to complete them. So I finally have my dremel! And my first project- glass etching!

This is one of those crafts anyone can do! The hardest part was opening the box, and realizing I had no idea how to work it. With my dad in another city, I was forced into the most unpleasant part of a new tool....read the directions.

Bleck. After that, came the fun part. I gave up trying to figure out which bit did what, and decided to google a bit, and guess on the rest (I later found an insert I had missed, which explained the pieces a little better). I decided to just go for it. I had it all plugged in, and then had second thoughts. I decided taking a power tool to a piece of glass, that very well may shatter and blind me, could be a bad idea without a little more protection. I grabbed a tshirt from the laundry hamper, and decided it would suffice to soften the potential flying shards of glass.

The bit I used

A grape jelly jar was to be my first project.

I have to admit, this could not be easier. Once again, you're reading a post from one of the least "artistic" people out there...the one that still draws like a 2nd grader. So if it looks awful, its me....not the dremel.

The only difficult part, is learning to basically write with a pencil, attached to a tickle-me-elmo (by that I mean, it vibrates quickly in your hand, like most power tools) Once you have that mastered, that's it!

I etched on 4 of the 8 sides- and it looks great! (I think it looks better in person, when you can rotate it to see all the sides!)

Dremel Craft #1 is a total success!

Blog Title

I've been asked recently- why I have a blog title about law school, when I mostly blog about crafts- well great question, simple answer.

I had no intention of blogging about crafts.

I'm a crafty individual, and often in college had a project strewn about our living room (to the dismay of my roommates) Crafting is what I've done, much before this blog. But my crafts have increased tremendously since the blog, or at least, I've realized the extent to which I craft, now that I photograph and journal about my projects.

My first month or two of blogging- revolved around writing about law school- keeping my parents and a few friends updated about how life was going. It was my way of telling them "I'm still alive, and please don't make me call each one of you to update you on what I've been doing"

I've also come to the realization, that law school will NOT last forever (thank goodness) and I fully intend on blogging after school...therefore a name change, and possibly url change must be made.

I will have to deal with that when the time comes.

However, that is my answer for why my blog, at first glance, appears to have ZERO to do with crafting and fun things...and appears to deal only with the mundane life of an overworked law student.

Tiramisu

Kevin and I had a delicious tiramisu dessert while we were in Las Vegas- which got us thinking- why don't we try this? So here we are!

I found a simple enough recipe here but had a heck of a time finding lady fingers at the store, and I wasn't in the mood to make them from scratch, so we went with nilla wafers instead!

Our recipe
6 egg yolks
3/4 cup white sugar
2/3 cup milk
1 1/4 cups heavy cream
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 pound mascarpone cheese (2 small cartons- 16 oz total)
1/4 cup strong brewed coffee, room temperature
2 tablespoons rum (we used the whole mini bottle which cost $1 at the liquor store, the nilla wafers soaked up more than the recipe said)
1/2 box of nilla wafers
1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder (we just sprinkled it on the top, so I'm not sure how much it was)

Directions

In a saucepan, whisk together egg yolks and sugar. Then whisk in milk and cook on medium heat, stirring constantly (or else you will get bits of cooked egg), until mixture boils. Boil gently for 1 minute, remove from heat and allow to cool slightly. Cover tightly and chill in refrigerator 1 hour. (or about 30 minutes if you are impatient like us)

In a medium bowl, beat cream with vanilla until stiff peaks form.

Whisk mascarpone into the cooled yolk mixture until smooth.

In a small bowl, combine coffee and rum.

Dip the nilla wafers in the coffee mixture, and lay them on the bottom of a casserole dish.

Spread half of mascarpone mixture over ladyfingers, then half of whipped cream over that. Repeat layers and sprinkle with cocoa.

Cover and refrigerate 4 to 6 hours, until set.

Graduation is only 17 months away

The start of a new semester is ~~glaring at me, threatening to punch me in the face,~~ on the horizon. The good news, my grades came in on friday, and I'm pleasantly satisfied with how I did (yay!) The bad news....that means there was no good excuse to just stay in vegas, and find a new calling as a black jack dealer.

Since I've been spending more time traveling, with friends and family over winter break...I've started to get that question. You know, the question that every college student dreads

"So what will you do when you graduate"

Uhh......

I sorta figured I would have this down by now. You know, the idea would just "pop" into my head, and I'd be ready to go!

It's not that I don't have anything I WANT to do..Its that I want to do EVERYTHING

Try everything, atleast once

A few of my answers this week:

Become a lawyer (the obvious choice)

Teach undergraduate business and/or law course/s

Become a flight attendant (still one of my lifelong goals)

Work in Human Resource

Work in a company, doing law/employment related things

Run my own business (not sure what it would be....)

Take any job, anywhere, as long as it sounds cool, and I'm in a fun place

Work on a cruise ship (the HR director can still come down to sing and dance with the waitresses right?)

Be a Starbucks district manager....In Australia

You know the movie "Up in the Air" Well I think I would love his job. I mean, if someone has to travel and fire people for a living...why not have it be someone that is sorta nice?

So here is to the start of a new semester...possibly the busiest thus far.

I have a new job (more on that later), I still have my old job, I need to apply for a summer job, I'm back up to 15 credit hours, and I'm running my etsy store.

All I need to find time for is homework, eating and sleeping....and I should be just fine!

Fabric Shoe Embelishments

Remember my embroidered shoes I decorated a while back? Well I wanted to make something fun like that for Kevin's sister for Christmas! I found these striped red shoes at target (I have them in blue as well...so I know they are great!) And I used fun fabric scraps to decorate them!

All you do is use the iron on webbing, and iron it to the back of the scraps. Then pull off the paper, and iron it to the shoes. I used a washcloth for support, to iron it on the shoes.

Then sew around it as you would like! I use a thick needle (from the craft store) I think its used for some kind of basket sewing? But they work great for sewing through canvas. Just be gentle, and use a thimble. (I broke one needle during these)

And that's it!

Gingerbread Cheesecake Cookies

Another ridiculously easy recipe (the only kind I will even try!) I found the recipe here. These are delicious little cream cheesy goodness. I made them for a new years eve party, and am just getting around to posting about them.

What You Need

1 (30 oz) package Pillsbury Gingerbread Cookie Dough (refrigerated section)

4 oz cream cheese, room temperature (I think it could use about 6oz....I like it to taste more cream cheesy)
2 cups powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla

Ball up about 2 tablespoons of the cookie dough, and place them into cupcake liners

Then make a small indention in the middle of them

Mix up the cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla

Put it into a ziplock bag, cut off the tip and pipe it into the cookies. Be generous!

Place them in the over for about 9 minutes at whatever temp the cookie dough says!

They turn out just perfect! I'm not 100% sure if the cupcake liners are needed, I feel like it would keep the cookie shape without it...but I haven't tried it yet, so I can't say that for certain.

Litte White Wedding Chapel

Even though weddings seem a little over the top these days, and I'd seriously consider an elopement to save the $$....we didn't. So mom, when you are reading this....please stop screaming and have a cup of coffee.

Got all dressed up (like you should in Vegas) and went out on the town

And have visited most (but not all) of the casinos

Red Velvet Cake Balls

I love easy recipes, that yield lots of goodies, and look delicious. This is one of those recipes. I found it here- now here is how these red velvet cake balls are done!

What you need:

1 box red velvet cake mix

White almond bark

1 can of cream cheese frosting

I used a 1/2 cup of chocolate chips to drizzle over the top for a cute design (but not necessary)

First- make the cake. Put it in any regular ole sized pan, and bake it. If you haven't made cake balls before, you bake the cake, let it cool, then mash it up.

Then use a mixer to mix up your cake and the 1 can of frosting.

Now I prefer to use a melon baller, instead of rolling it in my hands. but you next want to make balls from the mixture. Place on waxed paper.

We made two very large pans of cake balls with this recipe.

Put it in the fridge for 20 minutes or so, just to let them set up.

Next is coating them with the white almond bark. Melt down the almond bark (you will use the whole package). We went through a couple of different methods, and found our double fork method worked best.

Kevin held two forks, I spooned the almond bark over the top, and let the extra drizzle off into the bowl. It covers them nicely, even if it isn't perfect!

By the time you've done all of them, the first ones will be set up. I wanted to make them a bit prettier, so I melted down chocolate chips, and drizzled them with a fork.

Nothing special, but it just helps them look more finished!

Sequin Heels

DIY Sequin shoes! What more could a girl want?

A pair of simple black heels, modpodge and glitter, sequins and rhinestones!

A thick coat of modpodge

ignore the thumbprint

Then shake on the glitter

I waited for the glitter to dry just enough to put more modpodge on, the shake on the sequins!

Then I hot glued rhinestones on...just for a little more sparkle!

You can see I haven't pulled the extra hot glue strings off yet.

And they are ready to go!

The Start of An Adventure!

Guess where I am this lovely Friday morning (since its before 5am, it is so dark that you'd never actually be able to tell that it is morning yet...but the clock says it is...and it hasn't lied to me yet)

The Omaha airport! Even though I have an odd obsession with airports, that isn't even the best part! The best part is the week adventure I'll be taking. First stop, Denver! I've made the trip a number of times....to see Kevin (you know....that guy who has been chosen the lucky one to call me his girlfriend for the past 3 years and 9 months...but who's counting)

We will be spending a couple lovely days in Denver, before taking our very first trip together! (not including the mind-numbing road trips through Kansas on occasion since we went to undergrad in Oklahoma)

Necktie Ring Holder

This craft incorporates so many of my favorite things- neckties (since I have a ton on hand right now) shoes, jewelry, and all around cheap-ness! I found the idea here but incorporated it to use neckties. Ties are great, since I already have alot on hand, and they have great patterns.

Supplies:

1. glue gun

2. 4-8 men's neckties (I used 4, by using ties twice...but you may need more!)

3. One high heel

4. Ribbon- optional

I picked up the high heel from goodwill today- they had a manager special for $1 shoes. (I'll be honest, I picked up a few for myself to wear as well...I don't often by shoes at goodwill...but sometimes they are just perfect!)

I picked up a size 7.5 I usually wear a 9.5 but that looked giant. You could go smaller, that just happened to be the shoe I wanted to use.

Now for the ties. Since they shoe I used was smaller at the top (like most probably will be) I used the smaller end of the tie for the top, and the larger end for the bottom of the wide part of the shoe.

You will want to roll the tie, very tightly. I ended up deciding the best way was to find the end that matched about the width of wear I would be placing it in the shoe, then making that my largest end by cutting the tie at that spot. Then I guessed on the rest for the length...let me explain...

I used about 1/3 of the tie for one roll. So measure where it will go, cut at that spot on the tie that matches about the width of the shoe... then fold it in half....and start rolling. If you get to the end of the spot you cut, and it about the size of the roll that you want....great! Hot glue it in place. If not, unroll, fold it in half again but this time, don't make it quite so long, that way the roll will be a bit smaller when you roll it up again.

You'll want it to be rolled.

Start at the folded end.

And roll down

So glue the roll in place, but still hold it tight so it does pop out the side and unroll.

You want to hot glue it to the bottom and the sides of the shoe- DON'T hot glue the rolls together. You don't want them stuck, because you'll want to fit rings in between the rolls.

For me, I was able to use the smaller ends of the tie for the small parts, and the larger for the larger part of the shoe. That is why it only took 4 ties. You also want to stuff the toe at the bottom with some of the little extra that you have of one tie. Do that before putting the last large roll in. Just to make sure everything is secure!

I had glue all over the sides of the shoe by the end. So I decided to hot glue some trim around the shoe to help cover it up. That is 100% option....some of you are probably better with the hot glue gun!

And you're all finished!

Anyone have a great idea for the other shoe I have laying around now?!

Keyboard Magnets

Thanks to pinterest, I saw this idea here for magnets made out of old computer keyboards! My dad works in the computer industry, so thankfully he had plenty of old keyboards he was willing to sacrifice for my crafting endeavors!

Here is a quick rundown. Pull keys off- pliers or your fingers!

After spending my first week of break wandering aimless through craft stores...I started buying things just because they were on clearance...even if I didn't have a craft for them. My first purchase was a little bag of wooden spools. After getting them home, I came up with this

A cute little spool key chain! Its just as simple as it looks! Grab a bag of these- they come in different sizes...I got the one that was on clearance at the time.

Then get your materials and your hot glue gun

I used bakers twine for my string, and hot glued the end, and wrapped it around, securing it with hot glue as I went.

Then I hot glued the end of the string up- I thought it looked cuter that way!

I could have screwed the eyelet screw into the spool, but my hook was a bit wide for such a small spool. I went ahead and just filled the middle with hot glue, and simply hot glued it in place! Add the keyring and you're done!

I saw on pinterest, where if you write a letter to a Disney princess....they will send one back. well guess what....it works! I sent my letter on October 26th and got a postcard this week.

My letter I sent first

Do I love it....yes.
Am I a nerd....yes.
But I did want to see if it was true...or just one of those pinterest lies that gets passed around!

*note- the princess I wrote to was not the princess who signed the postcard...but I can't be picky! Just in case you have little ones out there doing this...just don't be let down!

Wire Tree Topper

I wanted to share a little holiday craft for your Christmas tree, even if it is last minute!! I worked on this little Wire Tree Topper after I made the wire trees a few weeks ago!

The fun part is- you can customize it and hang whatever you'd like from your topper- a wire monogram for your family, a star, a prized ornament or possibly an elf on the shelf (for those of you who have started that family tradition)

This works great with in thick wire. I had some laying around the house from other crafts, but you can pick some up at a craft store, hardware store, or use a wire hanger!

You'll want to first make a long skinny wire cone shape to fit on the top branch of your tree. You can work with it to fit your tree particularly, but these are a pretty universal design to balance on the top of your tree!

I used pliers to bend it into the cone shape, but you can also find a cone shape around your house, and bent it around for a more symmetrical design.

I always loop the bottom of my wire first, no need for anyone to be cut on the ends!

Then top it off with a hook. That way you can hang your designs from it!

Or if you'd rather, make a swirl, and you are able to stick photos, paper projects, or make a larger swirl and cut a star out of paper, and let your children decorate it!

You can use the spare wire to create other designs- spell out an inspirational Christmas word like "hope" or "faith" or you can make a monogram for your family!
